How
Wines are Named
A wine is typically named either for the grape variety used or by the
place of production. Throughout history, wines from certain countries
such as Australia, the U.S. and Germany were given names based solely on
their grape variety, other countries such as France and Italy would
identify the wine by their place of production. Over time this practice
has evolved significantly in the United States and New Zealand where
regions such as Napa Valley, Russian River Valley and Sonoma are
appearing on the wine labels and are indicators of the quality of the
product by most consumers.
