Some
basic geography goes into play when growing grapes for wine.
Wine
grapes are typically grown between the 30th and 50th degrees north and
the 30th and 40th degrees south. Historically the most Southern
vineyards are in New Zealand near the 45th parallel.
France, Spain and Italy were just three of the largest producers of wine
in the world as recently as 2002. Other large wine producing countries
include but are not limited to the United States, Argentina and Germany.
Algerian vineyards used to produce many fine wines however the
resurgence of Islamic consciousness in that region has greatly reduced
the wine producing industry in that region.
The leaders in overall volume export by market share during 2003 were
France with 22%, Italy with 20% and Spain with 17%. Other leading export
countries with under 20% of the market share were Chile, USA, Portugal
and Germany.
